 The
Peter Gidney Care Centre is a specialist healthcare
facility built to meet the needs of young people
(over 18 years) requiring long and short term care
or rehabilitation due to head and spinal injuries
or degenerative physical or nervous conditions.
The Care Centre is situated in rolling Kent countryside,
above a quiet country lane.
The centre shares extensive grounds with its sister
Beechcare Care Centre. This perfect location enjoys
the benefits of the services (including a country
inn) of the small Kentish village of Darenth, yet
is easily reached via the A2 and M25. The towns
of Dartford, Swanley and Blue Water Shopping Centre
are close by.
The Centre is named in memory of Peter Gidney a
local scientist and mathematician who suffered severe
head and spinal injuries in a road traffic accident
in ‘91 & was nursed at Beechcare for 5
years.
Peter gained the deep respect of all staff who warmed
to his generous, fun-loving spirit. Having established
treatment regimes and protocols, the demand for
Beechcare's services grew to the extent that The
Peter Gidney Centre was conceived, designed and
built in 1996.
The Peter Gidney Care Centre is specifically designed
for the care and rehabilitation of young people.
All 24 single rooms have ensuite showers, as well
as telephones and televisions and are pleasantly
decorated to provide a warm homely living environment.
Easily accessible toilets, wide corridors and the
installation of specialist lifting and moving equipment
are all aimed at ensuring a practical and functional
environment. Spacious airy lounge and dining areas
encourage a communal spirit and encourage interaction
with other residents.
The Care Centre has a large Physiotherapy Gymnasium
and great emphasis is placed on residents gaining
as much strength as is possible and achieving a
maximum range of movement. The multifunctional gym
is equipped with an ADL kitchen as well as the various
tables, frames and beds which are used for the rehabilitative
and therapeutic treatments carried out by our neurologically
trained Physiotherapist. There is also a basketball
hoop and badminton court for sporting and competitive
